Designing an Effective Introduction in the Collaborate Space
As you craft your introduction, consider the audience you are reaching:
- Are they subject matter experts in the challenge topic, or do they need background information?
- Is your goal to solve a problem, or inspire fresh thinking?
- Is everyone who has a perspective on the issue included in the audience & how might they best provide a perspective?
- How busy are they?
- How can you best grab their attention with a challenge title or headline?
- What’s the best way to help them focus?
- Are there images, links, etc. you can offer for attention or inspirational thought starters?
- What specific actions are you asking of them?
- What steps come after the ideas are collected / when will they hear from you?
Here is an example of an introduction that considers these points:
An effective practice is to have someone – or a few people – who will be a part of the audience review and offer feedback on your introduction. Ask them to stress test it for you before running it by the sponsor. Ask:
- What is your immediate reaction?
- Is the business outcome of the challenge clear?
- Is this topic presented in an interesting & inspiring way?
- Does the verbiage/imagery grab attention?
- If you could add one thing to make it even better, what would it be?
